Preserving Aruba’s Unique Hospitality
Dear Editor,
As a long-time repeat visitor to Aruba, I have always cherished the island for its unparalleled beauty, vibrant culture, and, above all, the warmth and friendliness of its people. It is this uniquely Aruban hospitality that sets the island apart from other destinations, creating a sense of connection that keeps visitors like me coming back year after year.
However, during my most recent trip, I experienced a noticeable shift that I feel compelled to address. While staying at a hotel, I found it difficult to communicate with staff in English or Papiamento. Instead, the majority of interactions were conducted in Spanish. Let me be clear: the staff members I encountered were hardworking, courteous, and eager to assist. My concern is not with their efforts, but with the fact that the distinctive charm of Aruba’s people seems to be fading from the visitor experience.
Aruba’s tourism industry has long relied on workers from abroad, and they have undoubtedly contributed significantly to the island’s success. Yet, I worry that the increasing reliance on non-Aruban workers, while efficient, risks diminishing the very thing that makes Aruba so special: the personal, welcoming touch that only Arubans can provide. It is this warmth and genuine care that resonates deeply with visitors and creates lasting memories.
I write this letter not as criticism but as a heartfelt plea to those who oversee Aruba’s tourism sector. Please recognize that Aruba’s greatest asset is its people—their smiles, their stories, their ability to make every visitor feel like family. Losing this aspect of the island’s identity would be a mistake that no pristine beach or luxury amenity could replace.
As Aruba continues to grow and evolve, I urge hoteliers, tourism boards, and policymakers to strike a balance that preserves the authenticity of the Aruban experience. Whether through hiring practices, cultural training for workers, or initiatives to promote Papiamento and English proficiency among staff, steps must be taken to ensure that Aruba’s unique character remains intact.
The world is filled with beautiful destinations, but there is only one Aruba. Let’s work together to ensure that the heart of this island—its people—remains at the center of every visitor’s experience.
Sincerely,
A Loyal Visitor to Aruba
